About the Item

Scipione Vannutelli (Genazzano 1834-Roma 1984) Title: The port of Ripetta with the Toto Boat (Toto was the owner of the boat that carried people from one side of the river to the other) Provenance: Heirs of the Painter, not signed To speak of Vannutelli in the smallest circle of Roman art would be the same as speaking of Meissonnier in the Parisian world. As in Paris the French artist, so among us the Vannutelli is esteemed and known for his exquisite squares, paintings that in small size also contain great artistic value. His subjects are found gracefully and beautifully invented, his little figures are painted frankly, although they are very fine even in details, his color is clear and pleasing and above all his painting is never stunted”. Thus reported Prince Baldassarre Odescalchi regarding the art of Vannutelli, one of the most renowned and appreciated Roman artists abroad. His studio in the Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona received important clients from the aristocratic and international business world. On the other hand, his training took place already in Europe: From the study of the purist Tommaso Minardi to the Viennese Carl Wurtzinger up to Paris where he followed the fashionable painter Ferdinand Heilbuth. From here derived a genre production set in the past history, easily usable, chromatically lively and lively and technically impeccable. Success soon came to the Roman master, first by joining the Parisian merchant Goupil and then exhibiting his works in the most prestigious exhibitions until he won the Gold Medal at the Paris Salon of 1864 with the painting Intrigo. Work that was later purchased by Matilde Letizia Bonaparte for her residence in Rue des Courcelles and was at the same time reviewed with enthusiastic tones by Téophile Gautier, advocate of the art pour arti or rather an enjoyable art for its undisputed technical quality and not for what it represents.
