Woman at Rest

About the Item

Marvin Cherney 1925 -1967 The recipient of numerous awards and honours, colleauges and critics considered Cherney a true artist; a man committed to his craft and skill and yet that was only secondary to his poetic purpose. His portraits are based on a deep understanding of the human condition, they are revealing and yet convey a sense of mystery. His work is pure, both in technique and in intent, never bending to trend or fashion and always striving to share some insight about the subjects, a means of which he tells the truth and reports on the simplest pursuits. Cherney's work has been shown in museums and prestigious exhibitions across the country and his paintings are now found in permanent collections at many museums including the Whitney museum, Pennsylvania Academy of arts, and the Butler museum of art. Sadly, Cherney's career had just began to blossom when his life came to an end so unexpectedly. The majority of his work went unseen and remained undiscovered until now. We are excited to share some of his collection. Painter Jack Levine on Cherney “I first saw Marvin Cheney's work in the early 1950s, I was a juror for an art exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, I had the shock of recognition-I had just seen a real painter.” Awards and Honors Brooklyn Museum ( 1954, 1956 ) Baltimore Museum ( 1951, 1953,1955, 1956 Louis Comfort Tiffany award ( 1959 and 1960 ) National Academy of Design ( 1961) Pennsylvania Academy ( 1959, 1960 ) Silvermine Artist Guild ( 1958) National Institute of Arts and Letters ( 1960 ) National exhibitions National Academy of Design The Art Institute of Chicago Brooklyn Museum Audubon Artists University Of Nebraska Silvermine Artists Guild Butler Art Institute Howard University
