1950 Abstract Geometric Drawing in Pencil on Paper by Eve Clendenin NYC, Framed

About the Item

A geometric abstract drawing work on paper by New York City artist Eve Clendenin (1900 - 1974). Ms. Clendenin was both a student of and friend to the master 20th Century artist Hans Hofmann. Her letters and correspondence to Mr. Hofmann are well documented. This Abstract Expressionist / Geometric artwork is signed Eve Clendenin and dated 1950. It has been newly framed. The mat opening size measures approximately 9.5" wide by 7.5" high. Her biographical information is well documented on my website as well as other sources. From the Heather Karlie website, "Genevieve (as she was known in the social circles and society papers in New York City) was educated at Oxford University in London, the Sorbonne in Paris, the Royal Academy in London, the Banff School of Fine Arts in Canada as well as being mentored by Hans Hofmann, Ralph Pearson and Eliot O'Hara. Eve (as she called herself as an artist) was a member of American Abstract Artists group and exhibited with them for many years, including their traveling shows such as the one in 1955 to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. This also included the many exhibitions held at Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. In addition, Clendenin exhibited at Vose Gallery, Boston in 1946; Jacques Seligmann Gallery, New York, 1946; Baltimore Museum of Modern Art, 1958; and North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, 1969. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Artists, and the Provincetown Art Association." From her obituary in the New York Times, "Miss Eve Clendenln, an artist with works in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum here and in the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Va., died here yesterday. Miss Clendenin, who lived at 150 Central Park South, was 78 years old. She had studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Canada and the Royal Academy in London, and also with Eliot O'Hara and Hans Hofman. Miss Clendenin had received awards for her work from the Balitimore Museum of Art, the National Association of Women Artists and the Cape Cod Art Association. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Stanley O. Bailey." From the Aaron Galleries website: "Clendenin was a painter and printmaker who lived in New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts. Clendenin studied at Oxford University, the Sorbonne in Paris, the Banff School of Fine Arts in Canada and the Royal Academy in London. She was a member of the American Abstract Artists. Mentors included Ralph Pirson and Hans Hoffman." From the British Museum website: "Painter and engraver: New York; studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Canada and the Royal Academy Schools, London, and also with Eliot O'Hara and Hans Hofmann; received awards from the Baltimore Museum of Art, the National Association of Women Artists and the Cape Cod Art Association.".
