Absolu Tuberose 3, Black Ink Drawing on Mylar Paper Artwork, France, 2012

About the Item

Ink on Mylar, metalic frame. This piece has been presented at the ADIAF's De leur temps (6) exhibition, at the Collection Lambert in 2019/2020. “The Tuberose Absolute and Eau series are the result of a slow, progressive and patient improvisation. In terms of method, the drawings are defined by an absence of planning, the exclusion of any mental view of the finished product. As they are being drawn, my eyes focus on one little surface at a time, exploring the evolution of the trace, without retreating, nor presuming to know the whole. I refuse any preliminary composition: when finished, the drawing becomes a graphic material in expansion. It results in an image that is less unique and defined than part of a whole that potentially has no limits. It follows the logic of an extensive and flexible system. The method used on a micro scale for graphic works also applies on the macro scale to the material that will turn it into a piece: in the same way as all the shapes are a continuation of areas around them, each realized shape could be connected to another. The parts of the drawing blend weightlessly, and the drawing as a whole has the same emptiness as the parts: no direction, no top nor bottom, neither right nor left. This multidirectional dimension contributes to the spirit of “proliferation” of the drawing. At the root of my singular approach to creating each individual graphic element - and each piece - to be part of an expansive universe, is the discovery I made many years ago of the flow that is visible in the natural genesis of shapes. Leave ramifications, stalactite concretions, spiral shells... Imitating an organic shape is not my goal. But generating shapes that rely on a similar flow is what inspires my practice. The shapes I imagine are meant to exude the same spontaneous feeling. I hope for the work to have an immediate, natural, seductive impact, not to be geared towards an intellectual approach but rather towards deep, almost visceral, visual pleasure. You can loose yourself in the drawing, going from one discovery to another, as if facing an aquarium. It is to me, as I believe it is to others, a contemplative moment. The context required for the creative process is a special one: I work in silence, without sophisticated materials, without scents nor tasks, in a small space that eliminates any distance vis-a-vis the image. What seems to be a constraint is in reality the condition required for the process to succeed.” Sylvain Rieu-Piquet.

The double installation comes with one small and one large pendant together with a white lacquered wooden ceiling fixing. As with the Akari Series from the 50’s, the required assembly of the paper is part of the experience of this lamp, a tactical engagement fostering a deeper connection with the piece. As Valérie Maltaverne was studying Isamu Noguchi’s work to develop the Akari Unfolded collection, she was captivated by one sculpture in particular where the artist had assembled several small objects found on the beach in a suspended mobile...
