American pastel on canvas portrait titled 'The Golden Chair', created in Paris by Alice Pike Barney (American, 1857-1931) circa 1900-1911, signed and inscribed on lower left corner: 'Alice Barney - Paris'. The canvas is kept under glass and is framed. Alice Pike Barney, born in Cincinnati, Ohio on Jan. 14 1857, was an American portrait painter. She first studied painting in her native city with Elizabeth Nourse and continued in Paris under famed artists Carolus-Duran and James Whistler. She exhibited her work at the Paris Salons of 1889 and 1897, as well as at the Philadelphia Art Club in 1895 as well as in a multitude of other cultural venues throughout the United States. She lived in Washington DC until she moved to Hollywood, California in 1924. She was primarily a portraitist but also painted landscapes and nudes in both oil and pastel. Her sitters included Whistler and George Bernard Shaw. She was also a playwright and won the 1927 Drama League of America contest. She died in Los Angeles on Oct. 12 1931.
