About the Item
Amazing lithograph of a 1630 van Dyck painting by lithographer L. van den Wildenbergh (1803-1857).
The original painting of this rare antique lithograph (in its original early 19th century frame) is by worldfamous Flemish Baroc artist / painter Anthony van Dyck 1599-1641. This original 'Christ on the Cross' painting was created (or at least finished) in 1630 and it can still be seen in the Sint-Michielskerk in Gent, Belgium. It is the first time that we have ever come across a stunning 19th century lithograph and this particular specimen was made by another famous artist and lithographer by the name of L. van den Wildenbergh (1803-1857). Even with the wear to (and loss of) the gilding on the outside of the original, Empire Revival gilt wooden frame, to us, it perfectly complements this absolutely stunning lithograph. The lithograph ofcourse is also stunning because the etched copy of the Van Dyck painting (which this lithograph represents) is of a quality and beauty that only a true master could have created. The details of all the individuals playing a part in this worldfamous and historical scene are of a quality that really makes a master stand out from all other painters. However, what ofcourse stands out more than anything else are the human emotions that each of the individuals in this painting is experiencing. They are what make this lithograph so extremely powerful, intense and impressive. It even looks like the horse closes to Mary Magdalene too is radiating some form of empathy towards her. We shot some extra photos of the back so that you can see this work of art is completely original and even the hooks (where the copper wire for mounting runs through) are hand-forged wrought iron ones that date from pre 1850.
