"Anubis, Conductor of Souls, " Stylized, Muscular Depiction of Egyptian God

About the Item

This striking Art Deco drawing by Louis Léon Eugène Billotey depicts the jackal-headed, human-bodied Anubis, God of the Afterlife and conductor of souls. Billotey won the Grand Prix of Rome in 1907, and in the 1930s a painting of his was purchased by the National Museum of Modern Art in France. He designed a major fresco at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, and designed tapestries executed by the Gobelins factory in 1933.
