Classical Ruins by Jacob van der Ulft
About the Item
In this small sheet, van der Ulft sensitively observed the ruins of an old building, a seemingly destroyed castle in his native Holland and not one of his typical Roman composition. The influence of Jan de Bisschop, who had traveled to Rome, is strikingly evident in the elegant use of sepia wash, which is here fluidly applied to effectively capture the play of shadows on the surface of the building. In fact, van der Ulft is known to have owned and directly copied several of Bisschop’s drawings (see E.M. Zafran, Master Drawings from Titian to Picasso: The Curtis O. Baer Collection¸ Atlanta, 1985, p. 84, no. 43). However, Bisschop’s tendency to add narrative to his landscapes is countered by van der Ulft’s infusion of formal dignity or awe to his small-scaled depictions of ruined architecture.
