The French poet, writer, artist, and film maker Jean Maurice Eugene Clement Cocteau was born to a wealthy family on July 5, 1889 in a small town near Paris, France. Cocteau's father commited suicide when the boy was about ten years old—Jean did not publicly speak of the tragic event until 1963, the year of his own death. The family continued to live with his maternal grandparents and young Jean is brought up in an environment where the art, music and theater are held in high esteem.
Although Jean Maurice Carton initially wanted to become a furniture maker, his teachers Charles Malfray and Robert Wlérick encouraged him to devote himself to sculpture. He thus entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1928. He took part in the Salon des Tuileries in Paris in 1942-1944 and in the first Salon de Mai in 1945. He also took part in foreign exhibitions in London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cairo, the United States and Canada. In 1946 he received the Blumenthal Prize for his works. In 1949 he had a solo exhibition at the Galerie Bernier in Paris. In 1964 he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and was a member of the Society of French Painters and Engravers. In 1988, a major exhibition was held at the Musée de la Poste in Paris. Les Jumelles, one of his works, was exhibited in the gardens of the Elysée Palace. He was also an outstanding etcher and illustrator.

- Marie Laurencin Graphite Drawing, Female PortraitBy Marie LaurencinLocated in Phoenix, AZGraceful original graphite drawing by Marie Laurencin (1885-1956). Signed lower right with initials "M.L." Marie Laurencin, intimate of Braque, Picasso, Matisse and Appollinaire, was born in 1885. She held a celebrated place in the early part of the 20th century. She lived in the Montmartre district of Paris. Though her early portraits show the imprint of the Fauves and Cubists, her romantic and delicate temperament asserted itself against these schools. Called the 'muse' by her fellow painters, her works are loved for their fragile beauty. Though they may be feminine in subject and execution, the distortion of form and the simplicity of expression mark her for a modern master. In her later years, she became almost a hermit, although mothers with daughters...Category
