Jose Luis Cuevas, "Autorretrato en el Jardin," Ink Drawing/Watercolor, 1973

About

"Autorretrato en el Jardin" (Self-Portrait in the Garden), an intimate self-portrait by the Mexican artist Jose Luis Cuevas (1934-2017). Cuevas rebelled against the popular Mexican muralism movement of Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Sigueiros by presenting a darker vision of mankind. As William Grimes noted in his New York Times obituary of the artist, "Working almost exclusively in ink drawings, Mr. Cuevas depicted the wretched of the earth--the infirm, the deformed, the mad--in an unblinking expressionist manner that reflected the influence of artists like Goya, Breughel and Grosz . . ." Grimes also notes that Cuevas offers an "existentialist's view of the human condition, with hopelessness a given." Though his art is solemn, Cuevas is admired for the delicacy of his line and the elegance of his work in general. This is a very beautiful and moving drawing by the artist. Signed, dated and titled l.r. and on verso In 1992 the Jose Luis Cuevas Museum opened in Mexico City. The Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City held a retrospective of the artist's work in 2008. His work is also included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Sheet: 9" W x 11.5" H Framed: 14.75" W x 17.75" H x .5" D.
