Original "Cutaway" Drawing of the Lotus 20 Racing Car by Brian Hatton

About

Brian Hatton's painstaking "cutaway" drawings won him acclaim as one of Britain's great technical artists. This meticulously detailed pen and ink drawing (on illustration board) of the exquisite Lotus 20 racing car is the original artwork that was published in a two-page spread in the British car magazine, The Motor, on February 8, 1961 after the Lotus 20 was announced at the 1961 London Racing Car Show. The 20 was the first Lotus racing car to adopt a radically reclined seating position for the driver, which combined with the mid-engine configuration first explored (with great success) by Lotus on the type 18, endowed the car with slippery aerodynamics and a low center of gravity. The basic shape of the Lotus 20 was used by all subsequent Lotus formula cars of the next decade, and was duly copied by every other manufacturer of racing cars. The general image one conjures when thinking of Formula racing cars of that golden age, the 1960s, is essentially that of the Lotus 20. (During this decade, Lotus produced some of the greatest racing cars of all time. In particular, the types 25 and the 49 were as technologically Avant Garde as they were victorious in competition and both are evolved versions of the basic form pioneered with the Lotus 20.) This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original, well-published cutaway drawing of a much-loved Lotus racing car by one of the art's finest exponents. Note regarding condition: As this was a drawing for publication, there are several handwritten notes written at the periphery of the surface of the artwork (visible in the images). These are the editor's layout instructions, contemporary with the artwork, and do not detract from the aesthetic or historical appeal of the piece, which is in very good condition. Provenance: Temple Press, Ltd. (I bought this drawing, along with several others, at a sale in London in the 1990s, when the archives of Britain's two oldest automobile magazines, The Autocar and The Motor, were auctioned by Bonham's.) Literature: The Motor, February 8, 1961.
