Pair of René Buthaud Gouaches

About the Item

Stunning pair of René Buthaud (1886-1986) hand painted Gouaches of ceramic studies. The larger one is a charger and the smaller one are two vases. Totally amazing abstract art from one of the most famous French Ceramists. Both present themselves as small masterpieces and are framed in matching oak frames with mattes. One is slightly larger than the other one and both are Signed RB. Note light reflections on the glass. Larger painting is 24.25" tall by 21.75" wide and the smaller painting is 21" tall by 19.90"wide. Composite image may not be exactly to scale but approximate. Exhibited: Rene Buthaud: Collection of the Artist, Michel Fortin Gallery, New York, 1981, cat. nos. 83 and 87 Buthaud exemplifies the ease with which early-twentieth-century artists began to cross the rigid barriers between the fine and the decorative arts. Trained in painting and etching at the École de Beaux Arts in Paris, he later won a Prix de Rome. Such classical training likely influenced his proclivity for the female figure, as did his friendship with the artist Jean Dupas, who, following World War I, encouraged his interest in ceramics. In 1923 Buthaud established the ceramics division of Primavera, the decorating and interior design division of the Au Printemps department store. There, he developed his particular style, incorporating figurative imagery visually integrated with bulbous forms. Beginning in 1928 he supplied works to Maison Georges Rouard, a noted vendor of ceramics and glassware located in the fashionable rue de l’Opéra. Buthaud rarely conceived his pots as utilitarian wares but rather treated them as decorative works of art—canvases in the round. Provenance, Michel Fortin, Paris Color varies with lighting. Wear consistent with age and use. Slight browning to paper and slight waviness on bottom of the smaller piece. Slight creases along edges of both at corners. One with small tear at right edge and pinhole at upper edge. Other with pinpoint abrasion at lower left corner. Present Well.
