A Series of 12 Masterful Fresco Panel Paintings by Richard Selesnick & Nicholas Kahn,two of the most inventive, fantastical artists working today. The fresco paintings combine the surrealism of a Rene Magritte with the masterful fresco technique of a Michelangelo. All of portraits are painted in the old world technique of the subjects in profile, sprouting psychoactive plants from their mouths- The artists fabricated frames are carved with gold leaf incised character names in their complex fantasy narrative about the Drunken Beekeeper. This is from a series of 120 Frescoes all painted between 1988 & 1995, all unique--in this special series of 12 shown here is a self portrait of each artist. Must sell as a set of 12. Artists Richard Selesnick and Nicholas Kahn have been collaborating as Kahn/Selesnick since 1988 on a series of complex narrative photo-novellas and sculptural installations. They were both born in 1964, in New York City and London respectively and both are British citizens. They met at Washington University in St Louis where they collaborated informally from 1982-86 as photography majors. After graduation and a couple of years of showing their art separately they migrated to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to work on an evolving series of projects, some painting based, some photo based, all involving fictional attributions, narratives and sculpture. Between 1988 and 1995 they worked on installations combining painted portraits on plaster panels, bread, honey and wax sculptures displayed in wooden ritual architecture. A residency at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown Massachusetts helped them create an elaborate full-scale oaken chapel; Der Ruteloft des Betubten Bienenkaisers (The Rood-Loft of the Drunken Beekeeper) with 120 painted panels, all of heads in profile sprouting psychoactive plants from their mouths. ? Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick received their BFAs from Washington University. Their collaborative works have been widely exhibited in solo shows at the Yancey Richardson Gallery, NYC; Paul Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Lisa Sette Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona; Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY; Pepper Gallery, Boston, MA; and the Royal Photographic Society, Bath, England. Group shows include those at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, CA; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC. They have published two books, Scotlandfuturebog and City of Salt, and their work has been featured in Albany Times Union, Aperture, Art in America, Village Voice, Harper’s, New York Times, Boston Globe, and Provincetown Arts. Their work is in public and private collections including those at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Boston Public Library, and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Provenance: Purchased by Mars & Ronn Jaffe from the Maureen Knowlton Gallery, N.Y. and signed by the artists personally to them.
