18th century Italian school architectural capriccio featuring characters visiting classical ruins. Unsigned, oil on canvas in an elegant ebonized and gilded wood frame. Lovely color and detail. Capriccio means an architectural fantasy, placing together buildings, archaeological ruins and other architectural elements in fictional and often fantastical combinations.The subjects include Temple of Concordia, Arch of Titus and Pyramid of Caius Cestius. The Temple of Concordia is an ancient Greek temple in the Valle dei Templi in Agrigento on the south coast of Sicily, Italy. The Arch of Titus is a 1st-century AD honorific arch, located on the Via Sacra, Rome, just to the south-east of the Roman Forum.The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid in Rome. Ruin paintings, called capriccio, were particular favorites of grand tourists. See measurements below.
