18th Century Italian Heraldic Tempera on Ancient Canvas Paintings in Black Frame

About the Item

We proudly present, directly purchased from a private castle in northern Italy, these three large rectangular tempera on ancient cotton canvas paintings date back to the 18th century, Neoclassical period. Here we see a grand, fine, magnificent and important heraldic wall paintings collection featuring the noble heraldic crests of the most important Italian families, above all Venetian, Tuscan and Lombard all connected with the Republic of Venice traditionally known as La Serenissima (English: The most serene republic of Venice). The coats of arms from throughout Italy including; Florence, Pisa, Siena, Lucca, Venice, Milan, Rome and many others, are reproduced in alphabetical order from A to R, on each coat of arms there is a cartouche with the name of the family and some of them show only a D on the scroll. Some of these noble families are extinct, others still have living heirs but all are connected to Venice because their ancestors were Doges, important historical, military or ecclesiastical figures. The series of these very attractive hand painted antique canvas can be dated by 1979 beautifully hand coloured, each coat of arms represent one of the grand aristocratic families of that age. The Venetian Republic lasted from 697 AD until 1797 AD, year in which Venice was plundered by retreating Austrian and then French forces, following an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte and the Republic of Venice was split into the Austrian Venetian Province, a French client state. Venice became part of a unified Italy only in the 19th century. These three antique canvas paintings tell us, through the emblems of illustrious families, a very important piece of history not only for Italy but for the whole world since Venice, and the lagoon communities, have been a safe haven for the people escaping persecution in mainland Europe after the decline of the Roman Empire, grew into a trading power during the Middle Ages and strengthened this position in the Renaissance. Venice dominated trade on the Mediterranean Sea, including commerce between Europe and North Africa, as well as Asia. The ruling class led by the Doges, was an oligarchy of merchants and aristocrats so Venice and other Italian maritime republics played a key role in fostering capitalism. Venetian merchants were influential financiers in Europe. The city was also the birthplace of great European explorers, composers and artists. This fantastic collection of 18th century Old Masters paintings in original canvas, housed in their original black lacquer frames are in extremely good condition considering age and use, they show few signs of very old restorations done in a masterly way to preserve the ancient canvases that makes them even more attractive and fascinating as well as the small desirable color drops, anyway the color surface is still uniform and stable. Each canvas is numbered to be a one of a kind piece. Although very ancient, these paintings are extremely modern, with a pickled allure, the coats of arms are mostly in tri-color. On a light blue background the coats of arms are painted in tempera, each of them featuring white, red and blue colors with some green, brown or black spots depending on the symbols represented in the various coats of arms of the 165 families illustrated. They would be the ideal statement piece for furnishing all rooms in the home, from Library to Dining Room and Hallways to Reception rooms as they can be important works of art to decorate public buildings, clubs or hotels as well. Extremely rare and unique, these high end fine art items are both highly decorative and also an important historical testimony. Each painting can be sold individually. Repaired: Very old and exrtemely well made restoration on some tiny portions of the canvas. Wear consistent with age and use.
