About the Item

Study for “Den store hvide flok” (The large white crowd). Signed and dated H. Dohm 1910. Chalk and oil on paper laid on canvas. Heinrich Dohm was a celebrated portrait and landscape painter that was a student at the Danish Royal Academy of Arts. He was born in Copenhagen in 1875 and died there in 1940. During the last 30 years of his life he excelled at painting art with a religious theme. So it is with this painting The White Crowd which is a study for the painting now hanging in Holmen Church, Copenhagen, Denmark. The soft color of the painting and the immaculate faces of those seen in the crowd bring a serene comfort to the observer. Is this Heaven? It certainly seems to be what Dohm has in mind as he painted the painting stands almost 8 feet tall and the crowd appears endless. By using shades of white as the primary color Dohm has created a masterpiece that soothes the viewer and makes you continue to look at the vastness of the crowd as if in hopes of seeing ourself among the crowd of the heavenly hosts gathered in this magnificent painting. Heinrich August Emil Dohm (27 September 1875, Copenhagen–28 January 1940, Copenhagen) was a Danish artist who painted portraits and genre works and for a period specialized in religious paintings. Biography: After serving as a painter's apprentice in 1893, Dohm attended the Danish Academy from 1894-1898 where he studied under Otto Bache and Frants Henningsen. He painted mainly portraits, landscapes and genre works but especially from 1900-1915 he made many religious paintings. His breakthrough came in 1921 when he painted King Christian X riding his white horse over the border after northern Schleswig rejoined Denmark in 1920. From 1925, he also painted landscapes of Fanø which became increasingly colourful and Impressionistic. Among his most famous works are the altarpiece in Veirup Church: Abrahams vandring til Moria Bjerg (1899), his wall painting in the chapel in Holmens Cemetery: The Large white crowd / Den store hvide flok (1908-1915) and his portrait of Thorvald Stauning (1929) - Prime minister of Denmark. Dohm travelled to Germany (1895), Paris (1909), Berlin (1911–1912). Holland and Belgium (1925), London (1929), and Italy (1934).
