About the Item
A 19th century large Italian Painting depicting the Abduction of Europa, inspired by Ovid’s story in Metamorphoses—the Rape of Europa, the mythological famous legend featuring Zeus and Europa, the daughter of the Phoenician king.
According to the story, Zeus transformed himself into a handsome white bull and abducted the lovely princess Europa from the beach, where she was playing with her friends.
This large antique Italian oil on canvas painting is signed lower left by the Italian painter Carosini, is a very decorative painting, comes from a private Milanese collection, set in a giltwood frame. Good age related condition consistent with the mid-19th century dating.
