About

Gorgeous work of art , after painting by Alexandre François Desportes in which the protagonist is Pompeii, the foxhound dog of the King of France, Louis XV. This painting is of a more refined and measured baroque style typical of Desportes painting. Acquired in a château de la Sarthe. The original work, featuring a canine couple, Pompeii and Florissant, was commissioned by Louis XV in 1739 to be placed above the door of his chambers at the Château de Compiègne. In this work, the two dogs rest under an oak tree together with a large group of birds. It is located in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This work shows the importance of animals in the French Court, which have been present throughout history. During the reign of Louis XV, animals were found everywhere; this interest led to a greater sensitivity towards animals. Alexandre Francois Desportes (1661-1743) Born into a wealthy family, François Desportes was the son of Pierre Desportes and Élisabeth Duguay. In 1673 he traveled to Paris with his uncle and was trained together with Nicasius Bernaets. With his teacher, Desportes will learn the flamenco tradition, tempering the violence typical of baroque compositions. In 1662 he married Angélique Éléonore Baudot and had two children, Anne Louise and Claude François; the latter will be his student and the one in charge of writing his biography. After working for a time at the Royal Gobelins Factory around 1695 he became a portraitist at the Court of Poland until 1696. After returning to France, he specialized in interior decoration. In 1699 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture as a painter of animals. From 1700 he dedicated himself to painting numerous pictures for royal residences such as Versailles, Meudon, Marly, Compiègne and Choisy. It should be noted that both King Louis XIV and Louis XV commissioned him to paint on his favorite dogs. After his death, Desportes left us a large collection of studies based on the analysis of animals, plants or natural landscapes. The Count of Angevilliers, the director of the Royal Residences, acquired these sketches in 1784 and they served as models for the painters of the Sevres Manufacture.
