19th Century Oil Painting of a Pug Dog by Henriëtte Ronner Knip on Wooden Panel

About the Item

An adorable little oil painting of a pug dog by Dutch Belgium painter Henriëte Ronner-Knip on wooden panel in original frame. Ronner quickly became famous for her romantic animal studies and paintings, cats and dogs positioned in Romantic interiors full of Antiques. The Amsterdam Rijksmuseum even has Ronner's in their collection and so have several European Royal Families. Being very successful amongst the rich and aristocratic with her cat paintings she especially later in life mostly painted playing kittens and 'Salon' purebred cats. Pugs were and are a popular breed, they were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century and were popularised in Western Europe by the House of Orange of the Netherlands, and the House of Stuart. In the United Kingdom, in the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria developed a passion for pugs which she passed on to other members of the Royal family. This pug dog is probably a commissioned art work for one of Belgium's Nobles at the time. Size: Panel 21 cm x 26 cm. Frame 36 cm x 41 cm. Looks great with my other find; a lovely Austrian cold painted terracotta model of a pug dog, don't you think. Very nice collector's item.
