Luigi Sciallero (Genoa, 1829 - 1920). The Investiture of the Knight by the Queen. Oil on canvas, 31 x 45 cm. Frame cm. Signed and dated, 1904. Luigi Sciallero was a pupil of Giuseppe Isola at the Ligustica Academy of Genoa. He perfected himself in Florence where he frequented Giuseppe Bezzuoli who directed him towards purism. He represented Liguria at the International Exhibition of Paris in 1853. He participated, from 1854 to 1892, in the exhibitions of the Promoting Society of Fine Arts in Genoa. He approached the purist current, as revealed by the numerous works of religious subjects which, together with other historical-literary paintings and portraits, he presented between 1854 and 1892 at the exhibitions of the Genoese Promoting Society. Of this production, often favorably received by the critics of the time, today there are testimonies in some Genoese museums (The good Samaritan, Meditation, or Friar praying in front of a tomb, both at the Ligustica Academy; The last hours of Christopher Columbus, Gallery Civic of Modern Art). In some cases, these were subjects re-proposed in different editorial offices over the years. In some historical-literary works (Laura coming out of the bathroom, The daughter of Sion) he adhered to romantic motifs tinged with sensualism. The education to become a knight required a long and hard training. At the end of this internship, around the age of twenty-one, he received the investiture as a knight which took place with a solemn ceremony. The night before the young man was washed and shaved. Dressed in a white tunic (symbol of purity), a red cloak (emblem of the blood he was willing to shed in the name of God) and a black surplice (representing the Death he must not have feared), he was led into a chapel. , where he would spend the night praying.
