About the Item

An outstanding painting by Jesus Maía Lazcano. The work, entitled de la forma constructiva y del desarrollo, is part of the series “Del Orden Natural”, which was exhibited in 1995. The painting presents us with an exterior view from what appears to be a window or a balcony, located several meters above ground level, due to the height from which the trees are represented. The color of the sky seems to be tinged with a dark tone that announces dusk. His technique, close to hyperrealism, manages to capture every detail of the landscape, every leaf on the trees and every vein in the marble that adorns the interior of the coffers on the wall that protects the end of the balcony. All this is presented to the spectator as if he were observing it through a window, since the artist has even included what would be the window sill at the bottom, going beyond the canvas. It is a resource full of originality. Through architectural elements, the artist rearranges the landscape and articulates the representation of an imagined reality filtered by historical memory and personal experience. Like many of his works, the work is tinged with an aspiration towards the sublime, towards an idealization of reality, which lies in the absence of the human figure: without it, the landscape seems to go on forever in the absence of historical charge. Everything in his work is transcendental. With Caspar Friedrich as an inevitable reference in the search for the representation of the sublime, he follows the line of man's anxiety in the face of nature, since it threatens him, especially due to the impact that man causes on it. All this is also mixed with the uncertainty caused by the future. For example, another of his series, “El tempo helado” was born from a trip he made to the Arctic in 2017 and in it he intends to capture in his works a landscape that, in a few years, will probably have disappeared. This demonstrates the deep background of him, in addition to his splendid formal technique. The artist says that he feels the need to create and communicate, to cause his work to serve to move and reflect. More about the artist... Jesús Mari Lazkano was born in Bergara, Guipúzcoa, in 1960. This Spanish painter, graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country and has exhibited in Europe, America and Asia. In addition, his painting is part of the collection of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. He is considered one of the greatest exponents of realistic painting in our country. Very interested in exploring landscapes from a sublime point of view, several of his series precisely link architecture and landscape, always with a notable absence of the human figure. His works are realistic, although we are referring to the technique, since in reality they go far beyond realism, propelled by a remarkable imagination and background. In more than a hundred works, usually composing series, he demonstrates his interest in nature and architecture, almost always combined. Far from the traditional landscapes, mostly bucolic, he tries to tint his works with the concept of "the sublime". Recently, the NEREA publishing house has published a complete monograph on his works.
