Marco Calderini (Turin, 1850 - 1941) Lake Maggiore with the Isola dei Pescatori Oil on canvas, 88 x 141 cm - frame 118 x 169 x 9 cm Signed lower left One of the main exponents of Piedmontese landscape art of the nineteenth century, a man of broad culture and moral stature, focuses almost all of his long pictorial activity on the theme of the landscape reproduced from life between the Piedmontese and Valle d'Aosta countryside and mountains. The decisive artistic and moral influence of the master Antonio Fontanesi appears in his youthful works, from which he later distinguishes himself with the approach to the realist current of the Rivara School and personalizes his works with a rigorous naturalistic realism that accentuates a sense of immobility, totally opposite to that of the teacher. The subject is rendered with extreme precision, geometric and perspective calculation. Born in Turin of Michelangelo, courier at the post office and the French Virginia Pernaud, he enrolled in the faculty of literature of the University of Turin and at the same time obtained a diploma as a teacher of French, history and geography. Addressed to art by some friends, he enrolled at the Albertina Academy in Turin, where from 1867 to 1873 he attended the lessons of Enrico Gamba, Andrea Gastaldi and Antonio Fontanesi, obtaining a gold medal in 1872 at the conclusion of the landscape course. Fontanesi himself soon started to reproduce subjects from life, who accompanied him to paint in the Turin countryside; at the end of his academic studies, Calderini opens a studio with his friend and colleague Francesco Mosso. He has been appearing at the annual exhibitions of the Turin Fine Arts Promotion Society almost continuously since 1870. At the 1880 Exposition he presented nine canvases and won the jury prize for Morning of July, the following year he was awarded a bronze medal at the Colombian Exposition in Genoa. In 1883 he presented the solitary statues again at the International Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome, which was purchased by the Government for the newly created Gallery of Modern Art and participated in the Nice exhibition. The following year he is at the Italian General Exhibition in Turin (where he is a member of the acceptance and staging committee) with various works, including Winter Sadness, purchased by the Government and also presented at the Italian Exhibition of Earls Court in 1888, year in which he participates in the Barcelona International Exposition (repeated in 1907, when he wins an award). The same work was awarded in 1893 at the Salon de Paris. At the same time, he devoted himself assiduously to writing and art criticism, collaborating for numerous magazines such as L'Illustrazione italiana, the national review and the literary journal of Turin; in 1884 he published the posthumous Memoirs of F. Mosso, painter, followed by monographs dedicated to contemporary artists, such as the master Antonio Fontanesi (1925), Giovanni Battista Quadrone, Alberto Pasini, the sculptor Vincenzo Vela and Carlo Marocchetti (1928). He collaborates in the publication of three volumes on Leonardo da Vinci, financed by the Russian patron Sabachnikoff, his great admirer who wants him as a companion for a series of trips to Scotland and Ireland and works as a consultant to important families for the preparation of their own collections of art (Guagno Poma di Biella Collection, Ricci Oddi Gallery in Piacenza, where, not surprisingly, there is a rich collection of the works of the master Fontanesi). The Marco Calderini Archive, set up at the State Archives of Turin, contains a collection of documents concerning the artist's private life, monographs by painters as well as letters exchanged with family members, colleagues, such as Mosè Bianchi, Giovanni Boldini, Carlo Ademollo and Nicolò Barabino and intellectuals, such as Cesare Lombroso and Felice Cavallotti.
