Mid Century Still Life by Joseph Mellor Hanson, 1956
Located in Hudson, NY
Description "Still Life With An Orange" oil on canvas was painted by James Mellor Hanson (1900-1963) in 1956. It is in excellent as found condition and mounted in a wonderful period frame. This was part of the Herbert F. Johnson Museum inventory till 20+ years ago when it became part of a prominent collection in East Hampton New York. The canvas measures: 24" H. by 29" W. The frame's exterior : 31.50" H. by 36.50" W. Hanson was born in Yorkshire, England in 1900. He left England in 1925 for Paris where he studied with Fernand Leger and Andre Andre Lhote and worked with Le Corbusier. He returned to England after 8 years and became part of the circle of artists that formed around Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. By 1938 he had a Studio in NYC until he joined the art faculty at Cornell University, where he taught until his death in 1963. He exhibited widely at MOMA, Whitney, Art Institute of Chicago and the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg. This Still Life is considered an example of his mature work, where he has taken his early influences from both Leger and Nicholson and created a style unique unto himself. This painting was kept in the artist's collection until his estate was given to Cornell University's Johnson Museum Of Art. His work is in several museum collections in the United States and England, including The Metropolitan Museum NYC, MoMA, the Nelson-Atkins in Kansas City, the White Museum at Cornell, National Museum Wales, National Museum Cardiff, and Bankfield Museum in Halifax, England, The Hepworth Wakefield, UK Partial exibition list: 1928 – Galerie Mots et Images, Paris 1928-32 – Salon des Independants, Paris 1929 – Galerie Aubier, Paris (group) 1935 – Galerie Jeanne Castel, Paris 1937-38 – Wertheim Gallery, London 1938 – Bankfield Museum, Halifax, England 1941-57 – Passedoit Gallery, New York (8 one-man exhibitions) 1943-50 – Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (group) 1950 – Art Institute of Chicago (group) 1950 – Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio (group) 1953 – Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (group) 1954 – MoMA, New York, 25th Anniv. exhibition (group) 1959 – Corcoran Gallery of Art, D.C. "Christmas Stars" by Guido Borgianni. Italy, 1960
Located in Budapest, HU
Guido Borgianni was born in New York on June 11, 1915, to Florentine Roberto Borgianni, a leather merchant, and Sara Herreshoff, who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the United States and became a legend in the construction of the racing boats that also participated in and won the America's Cup. Guido was not even a year old when, once his parents' marriage had foundered, his father brought him back to Florence. Of Guido Borgianni's extraordinary gifts as a draftsman and painter, Galileo Chini, his neighbor, noticed, and he worked to see that talent refined. Thus Borgianni attended the Academy of Fine Arts under Felice Carena, a strict teacher but one who knew how to appreciate the qualities of his pupils. In the first part of his life he signed his works in black. Then, when he became a pointillist, he began to use red. Among his great admirers were Alessandro Parronchi and Oskar Kokoschka, who was captivated by Borgianni's paintings during his Florentine stay in 1949. Soffici, Saetti, Malaparte, Montale, Pratolini, and Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of Vittorio De Sica and Italian neorealism, all liked him very much, finding him "as beautiful as a Corot." In 1946 he exhibited at the Quadriennale in Rome. After his marriage to Simonetta Avila in 1954, his activities were enlivened by travel: in 1955 to Venice, in 1957 to Paris, from 1958 to 1962 around Italy, in 1964 to Spain, in 1971 to New York and Barbados Islands. In 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Mostra Nazionale del Fiorino in Florence, and in 1956 he was appointed Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. In 1957 he was awarded First Prize at the Portrait Exhibition at Dante's House in Florence. Upon his death, deep condolences were expressed by the president of the Florence City...

"The Seated Woman" by Albert Andre
By Albert Andre
Located in Wiscasset, ME
Framed watercolor by Albert Andre signed lower right. Measures 17" x 15" including frame and 12" x 9" sight. Provenance: Sothebys Andre came to Paris in 1889 as an industrial designer. At the age of 23 he enrolled at the studio of William Bouguereau at the Académie Julian, where he met Ranson, Louis Valtat and the young poet and dramatist Henry Bataille, who at the time was training as a painter. He illustrated L'étang de Berre by Charles Maurras and Les Petites Alliées by Claude Farrère. He produced cartoons for tapestries for the Beauvais factory. In his youth he worked in Paris and Loudun, but later settled in the Midi, where he became curator of the museum in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, building up a major collection of contemporary art, including works by Monet, Renoir, Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse and Despiau. In 1923, as a friend of Renoir, he compiled his recollections of the painter in a preface to an album of collotypes of his works. He was initially influenced in his painting by Delacroix, and it was Cézanne's paintings that helped him discover how to give the impression of volume using colour: warm tones for illuminated surfaces and cool colours for shadow. But it was undoubtedly Renoir who had the most profound influence on him, especially as it was Renoir who noticed his paintings in 1894 and introduced him to Paul Durand...

Antique and Vintage Paintings for Sale on 1stDibs

When paired with the perfect frame, the right antique and vintage paintings and other wall decorations can either subtly showcase your personality or steal the show altogether.

The earliest paintings were created on the walls of caves, proving even our ancient ancestors knew that striking artwork is meant to be on display. Cave paintings on an Indonesian island are reportedly older than the earliest cave art in Spain and France, and the figurative paintings back then were produced with inorganic pigments like iron oxide.

Later, the people of Ancient Greece — who learned about art from the Egyptians before them — conceived panel paintings of wax and tempera that were collected and publicly displayed. In the centuries that followed, artists would be commissioned to create large-scale wall murals and frescoed ceilings in sprawling European palaces and in the homes of the aristocracy.

Today, 1stDibs makes it easy for you to celebrate this rich history in your own home. Our collection of paintings includes Art Deco paintings, baroque art and a broad range of other categories. Search by material, period or other attributes to find the right fit — browse an array of 19th century landscape paintings in giltwood frames or abstract oil paintings and portraits made during the 1950s and ‘60s.

An understated contemporary work can complement your space’s color palette without drawing the focus away from the other pivotal design choices you’ve made over the years. Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop art, on the other hand, demands attention with its array of vibrant hues and subjects inspired by popular culture.

Whether you aim to create a gallery in your home or build a single, stunning focal point, you can find what you’re looking for in an extensive inventory of paintings on 1stDibs.
