Aaron Bohrod Still Life "Blue Venus," 1960s

A finely detailed still life titled "Blue Venus," by the American artist Aaron Bohrod (1907-1992), best known for his trompe l'oeil paintings. Trompe l'oeil refers to a highly realistic style of painting that gives the illusion of of being real. This work was painted between 1954 and 1964, the most important period of his residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The composition of the painting within this painting alludes to the work of other great artists fascinated with the female nude such as Titian, Ingres and Manet. The central figure of a shiny, blue metallic doll-like figure seems to be a harbinger of Jeff Koon's polished, stainless steel balloon animals. Signed. Bohrod's style has also been referred to as magic realism--realistic images mixed with elements of fantasy. In this work the cool detachment of the robotic, headless "Blue Venus" contrasts with the seductive nude pictured in the painting shown behind her. The enigmatic and mysterious composition reflects Bohrod's sense of humor, irony, and knowledge of art history. His work is included in several public collections including: the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. frame: 17.5 in x 13.5 in
