It isn't without reason that viewers believe they've come across an unusual and perhaps rarely seen painting by renowned artist Robert Motherwell. However, the artist behind this exceptional abstract titled "Quantum 17" is Robert Diesso who was a long-time friend of Motherwell. The large black elements and lines that are painted across the vibrant red background are clearly in the manner of Motherwell's Elegy to the Spanish Republic series. However, that is where the similarities end. Robert Diesso's medium of choice has always been oil on canvas or finished board, while Motherwell preferred to paint only with acrylics or house paint. Additionally, his objects or elements were always applied in the form of gestural abstractions, either dripped on, spattered across and even smeared onto the canvas. Robert Diesso on the other hand executes his artwork with a preconceived composition and greater control of his colors and their application. Whether decidedly Motherwell or not, Robert Diesso's paintings are increasingly being acquired by collectors and those who appreciate art.
