"Applause for the Acrobat, " Extraordinary Art Deco Painting on Silk, Paris

About the Item

Painted on silk velvet fabric in the late 1920s by Rudolf Gowenius, a Swedish painter who settled in Paris, this remarkable scene shows a circus or carnival acrobat at the center, his legs contorted and seated on a pedestal, being applauded by an audience including a sailor, a bearded man and an elegantly-dressed couple. The artist studied first at the Stockholm School of Fine Arts from 1919-1921 before leaving for Paris in 1923. Gowenius settled in the Montparnasse district near other Swedish artists, and studied under André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Over the years he was commissioned to do murals and paintings for public spaces, and developed a reputation for paintings on precious fabrics, such as this example. One of his best known works was a set of murals on silk for the Bar O.K. in Paris, painted in 1929. This large painting, executed in a range of rich, ruddy browns, taupe and ivory, is signed "Paris."
