Authentic Albert Brendel Antique Oil Painting of Village & Donkey, 19th Century

About the Item

This bright and striking work by Albert Brendel (German, 1827-1895) captures a genre scene of village life during the mid-19th century. It is characterized by distinct bright blues and vibrant high Chroma greens against the stucco facade of the buildings. The inhabitants are likewise colorfully dressed, shaded from the heat of the summer day in a small tent where they appear to be preparing food. A lone donkey with a reed satchel awaits his rider along the dirt path. It is a very striking and attractive scene, restored in the last decade and remaining in overall excellent condition. Albert Heinrich Brendel studied at the Berlin Academy of Art under Wilhelm Krause, then going to Paris in 1851 to study under Palizzi and Thomas Couture. Attracted to the spirit of the Barbizon, he formed friendships with the masters of this school of painting upon returning from a year of study in Italy to settle in Paris. He exhibited his works in Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Paris and Nantes. Two of his works are held in Berlin's Nationalgalerie, "Schafe im Stall" and "Treibende Viehherde"; other works are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Berlin's Kaliningrad. Literature: E. Surface is clean and vibrant with light craquelure; tiny surface chip to left of chimney and minor rubbing along edges of frame. Under UV shows in painting to head of donkey, a horizontal line at front left foot of donkey and edge of the door; spots of touch up in thatched roof, possible repair in lowest right corner, apparent touch ups in sky. Overall the painting is in gorgeous ready to hang condition. The frame is damaged and with old repairs; gilt and gesso loss throughout, corner cracks and losses.
