Jardin De Tuileries, Tonal Impressionist Landscape by Stuart C. Henry

About the Item

A lovely oil on board scene of Paris by American artist Stuart C. Henry (1906-1991), presenting a figure walking in the Tuileries Garden. Upon graduating from Harvard with a degree in fine art in 1928, Stuart Henry traveled extensively for several years throughout Europe. In 1931 Henry became a curator at the Berkshire Museum and assumed the position of director in 1938, which he maintained until his retirement at age 75. An accomplished artist, Henry exhibited in one-man shows during his directorship. He excelled in watercolor particularly, but his adept handling of oil paint is clearly demonstrated in this painting. A palette of cool green and grey is suffused by a warm atmosphere and flecked with pink highlights producing a pleasing scene recalling Monet's 'Matinée sur la Seine' series. The mansard-roof building pictured in the distance is the "Pavillon de Flore," part of the 1595 building campaign by Henri IV to connect the Louvre and Tuileries Palaces. The cornerstone of the Pavillon was laid in 1607, and in 1669 King Louis XIV held a ballet in its Grand Salon, with the King himself dancing in a part of the production. The "Flore" ballet is commemorated in the building's name. Signed and stamped estate of the artist on the reverse.

  • William Keith Original Tonal Oil Painting of California Misty Woodland Landscape
    Located in Tustin, CA
Original oil painting on canvas, Tonal-style landscape painting by listed, deceased, famous artist, William Keith (1838-1911). Painting features a group of majestic trees near a pond of water at deep dusk or early dawn. A lone shepherd, seated beneath a tree, watches over his herd of sheep as they make their way down to the water. The tone is relaxed and misty, with softly blurred details and an air of hazy tranquility. William Keith was a Scottish-American painter famous for his plein air California landscapes, characterized by how the landscapes captured feelings and emotions, rather than actual details. He was neither pure Realist nor pure Impressionist. During the 1870s, Keith painted a number of six-by ten-foot panoramas, including "Kings River Canyon" (Oakland Museum, originally owned by Governor Leland Stanford) and "California Alps" (Mission Inn, Riverside). These competed with paintings of similar size and subject matter by famous California landscape painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. Keith is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school of painting...
