"Bathers on Rocky Shore", Striking English Painting of Nude Male Figures, 1930s

About the Item

This striking and unusual painting -- beautifully composed with a rich palette -- depicts two nude British youth, sitting on a rocky outcropping during a day of swimming. Each is slender and sports a fashionable haircut, suggesting that they come from the upper classes of British society. The painter was Edward Bouverie-Hoyton, who is best known for a series of landscape paintings, giving him the experience to capture the natural setting for the two figures. He also executed a watercolor of the same two figures, so clearly came away from his day of painting with several drawings and preparatory sketches. Bouverie-Hoyton studied at Goldsmiths' College, and in 1926 won the Prix de Rome, spending the next three years at the British School in Rome. Like many English and American artists, he travelled widely in Italy, France, Greece and Spain. The painting is oil on canvas, and is signed in the lower lefthand corner. Dimensions include frame.
