"Bellerophon and Pegasus" Striking Art Deco Painting with Male Nude Mythological
About the Item
This remarkable scene depicting the moment when Bellerophon was about to lasso the flying figure of Pegasus after the creature paused for a drink below was painted in 1926 by Bryson Burroughs, one of the leading Classicists of his day. Burroughs served as chief Curator of Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1909 to 1934, and demonstrated a sustained interest in mythological scenes, among which this is one of his best. Going back to his days as a student of Puvis de Chavannes in Paris, who was renowned for his murals in the Boston Public Library, Burroughs was interested in narrative painting, and used simplified modeling and muted, beautiful colors to emphasis the story. Here, the lavender sky, the rich greens of the weeping willows, and the ivory tones of the flying horse all add great atmosphere to the scene. (Dimensions include frame).
