"Cleopatra in Glory, " Brilliant Art Deco Painting in Cobalt Gold, Coral and Pink

About the Item

Painted as a glorious, color-drenched frieze, this piece by the celebrated Chicago artist, Carl Hoeckner, depicts a half-nude Cleopatra being carried on her litter by Nubian servants before a great crowd of priests and nobles. Hoeckner is best known for his sombre prints and paintings protesting the brutality of war, but here he uses a palette of bold colors including cobalt blue, metallic gold, canary yellow, crimson and a deep brown for the skin of the Nubian figures. It's not clear if this painting served as an illustration for a publication or the basis for a mural, but his biographies mention his "Cleopatra" painting, so this piece figures importantly in his life's work. Starting in the mid-1920s, Hoeckner became interested in industrial and war subjects, and in 1929 he became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1930s he served as director of the graphics division of the Illinois Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. The medium is gouache on paper.
