Coming to Light IV Oil on Canvas Painting
Michele D'Ermo Art and nature are so closely entwined it is impossible to determine which precedes the other. Painting is her response to natural beauty. Observations of the natural world where sea and sky form horizon, where land and water merge, where light and shadow intersect, find expression in her paintings as they study the effect of fleeting light on water. Inspired by the work of Turner, Constable and Whistler, the organic shapes of her landscapes are minimally bare with recognizable destinations enhanced by intangible color fields. Transitions of light and shadow at various times of day and night are captured in her ever-shifting horizon line. Her focus on the natural world creates a tense balance between abstraction and realistic images. Some of her paintings are more representational while others are more abstract. Most of her work is infused with the impression of atmospheric qualities of the natural world. A central theme is her ever-present interweaving of memory and imagination. Rather than rendering an actual moment in time, her compositions evoke the feeling of a memory that is timeless and placeless. A preference for the fluctuating states of water and sky infuse her paintings with a feeling of tension and release. Her gestural brushwork is spontaneous rather than studied, appearing effortless and almost transparent. The lasting image is atmospheric without sacrificing structural clarity. The details may fade but the feelings linger. D’Ermo’s paintings have been exhibited for over two decades in museums and galleries in both New York and the Hamptons: Cheryl Hazen Gallery, Elisa Contemporary Arts, Salmagundi Arts, and 1stdibs Gallery in New York City, Peter Marcelle Gallery, Silas Marder Gallery, Guild Hall, and Parrish Art Museum in the Hamptons. Her paintings are often featured in the film and television industries, including HBO Films and NBC and CBS network television series. She often collaborates with interior designers and architects on special projects and commissioned works of art.
