Cruise, 1911, Criuise (1861-1945), Berks County, Pennsylvania Dimensions: Frame: 35 inches high x 55 31/2 inches wide; sight: 29 inches high x 48 3/4 inches wide This oil painting by Bucks County artist Louis J. Cruise depicts a farmyard scene. A chicken emerges from a farm building, with eight other chickens and a cockerel below. All of the birds are either standing or pecking on the straw pile, as are three other small birds. To the back right of the painting is a wood fence, beyond which is a grass field and woods. The painting is framed in a wide gilt frame. Cruise was a prolific artist who painted a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. In the background is the famous tugboat Ceres. Printed on the reverse within an oval opening there reads "Golden West, Reproduced from the original painting by Smith with permission of the Peabody Museum." Mark: Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston/Made in England. The original Wedgwood site was affected by mining subsidence, and plans were drawn for a new factory at Barlaston some miles south on the Trent and Mersey Canal. The new factory was built in 1938–40 and most of the old factory was demolished in the twentieth century after the Wedgwood company moved production to Barlaston Dimensions: 9 ¾ inches high x 12 ¼ inches wide; Sight 7 3/4 inches high x 9 3/4 inches wide. The large watercolor picture depicts the Bellerophon sailing out to sea past South Sea Castle off Spithead. Figures can be seen on board. She flies the Blue Ensign, a Union Jack and the Royal Standard. South Sea Castle is to her left and land with a row of houses on the right.
