Ernest Lawson Plein Air New York Painting of Wooded Landscape, Pond and Figures

About

Beautiful original plein air impressionistic and realistic style, oil on canvas painting, features a wooded landscape, with magnificent trees which dwarf a woman and child, who are walking side by side through the trees and towards a rocky pond's edge. Rolling hills and an open plain are in the background, with a vast blue sky and cumulus white clouds. Signed in the lower left hand corner, "E Larson". Features an old framing sticker on the canvas stretcher from Sea Cliff, Long Island. Born in Nova Scotia and educated in Canada, the United States, Mexico and France, Ernest Lawson (1873-1939) immigrated to the United States in 1888, at the age of 15, and became one of the most important American Impressionist painters at the beginning of the 20th century. After studying abroad, he returned to New York City in 1894 and in 1898, settled in Washington Heights (now northern Manhattan), at the time a rural area known for its woodlands. His style epitomized the American perspective of highlighting the landscape and scenes of everyday life. He was known for his use of a palette knife and heavy impasto of bold, bright colors and was considered to be impressionistic and realistic in style. By 1894, American impressionist William Merritt Chase labeled Lawson “America’s greatest landscape painter.” He made his debut in America in 1897 at the National Academy of Design (NAD), the most important art institution in America at the start of the 19th century. The NAD set national art standards based on classical art styles rather than contemporary art styles. In 1908, Lawson joined a group who called themselves "The Eight", an influential and innovative group formed by eight American artists who shared the common goal of rebelling against the classical genre scenes of popular American painters and were interested instead in more eccentric and contemporary subjects. Canvas measures 24" wide by 30" high. Frame measures 32.75" wide by 38.75" high by 3.25" deep. Painting was re-framed in the 1980s.
