A Fine 19th Century Pastoral Watercolor by Claude Hayes, Irish RI ROI RWS
About the Item
A fine and exceptionally large 19th century 'plein air' pastoral landscape, masterfully composed & executed in watercolors by noted 19th century Irish artist Claude Hayes (1852-1922), signed bottom left. This unusually large format watercolor expresses a remarkable atmospheric quality, deftly executed with a heightened sense of natural ambient light, perspective and depth of field. Laid down on artist board and mounted with acid free archival materials, set within a custom made gilt & ebonized frame fronted by a glass panel. Titled & signed on the boards reverse, ‘Near The Berkshire Downs, Woburn Hill, Addlestone, Surrey’.
Dimensions, 20.5" high x 26.5" wide (sight), 27" high x 33" wide (framed).
Bio: CLAUDE HAYES (1852-1922) was a highly accomplished Dublin artist most noted for his 'plein air' pastoral landscapes. He is listed in the 2nd Edition of 'The Dictionary of Victorian Painters' by Christopher Wood, as well as in the 2nd Edition of 'The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists up to 1920' by H.L. Mallalieu.
He exhibited 21 works at the Royal Hibernia Academy (RBA) in 1874, and exhibited over 40 years at the Royal Academy of London (RA) beginning in 1876 until 1916. He also represented England at the 1912 Venice Biennale. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Oil Painters in 1883 and to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors in 1886. His work is on permanent display at the Ulster Museum and the Leeds City Art Gallery, as well as at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
In his three volume work titled ‘Watercolor Painting in Britain’, noted British artist and author Martin Hardie writes with praise of Claude Hayes work saying “Maintaining worthily and without imitation their breezy open air style, Hayes work had the power of following broken ground into receding distance with able indication of form and color values. His transparent use of fresh and untroubled color allowed the sparkle of white paper play its part in the general scheme. He has never quite received the recognition which he deserves”.
