Francisco Zuniga Mexican Modernist Watercolor, 1984, “Mujer Sentada con Rebozo"

About the Item

Beautiful watercolor on paper by acclaimed Mexican artist Francisco Zuniga (1912-1998). Framed and in excellent condition. Signed and dated lower right. Image measures: 19 ½” H x 27 1/2" W. Frame measures approximately 24" H x 32" W. Internationally acclaimed sculptor, painter and printmaker Francisco Zuñiga was born in Costa Rica where he took drawing lessons at the Art School of San Jose. He worked from 1928-1934 in his father's business as a sculptor's assistant. In 1936 Zuniga immigrated to Mexico where he studied design and sculpture. In 1938 he became a professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts La Esmeralda in Mexico City and later worked as a freelance artist. Zuniga's preferred subject was the human, mostly female body of the rural population, focusing on its typical forms. Francisco Zuniga is also well-represented in major museum collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and Mexico City, the Phoenix Art Museum, Harvard University, Ponce Art Museum and the Hirshhom Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
