Andre Vigneau
1960
Gifted student, Andre Vigneau successfully entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux in 1905 at the age of 13 ½ years and was best known as a photographer, photography studio owner, and painter in Paris in the 1920’s – 1950’s.
Prior to WWII, Vigneau was a contemporary of Man Ray as well as the other surrealists and became a mentor to the noted photographer Robert Doisneau.
In 1925 Vigneau produced a collection of mannequins that were displayed at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Made of wax and painted silver, gold, and "Egyptian red," they were positioned in striking positions, their presence causing a stir. The mannequins were subsequently photographed by Man Ray and published in Vogue Magazine that same year.
Vigneau continued to produce paintings, photographs, films, sculptures, and assemblages up until his death, in 1968.
Along with Man Ray, Vigneau experimented and pioneered in the development of various photographic techniques including solarization techniques.
His later works include assemblages, often with plastic forms.
