About the Item
Monumental and quite extraordinary, this utopian scene -- all cast in a lovely, warm glow -- depicts a wide range of nude figures, mostly male, in a grassy river valley between mountain ranges, some recumbent and thoughtful, others gesticulating to the gods above, others striding along or gathered in a circle to observe some ancient rite. The flesh tones have a ruddy golden hue, and the mountains and sky behind are depicted in subdued hues of slate and the palest of blues. Altogether, the scene is remarkable and lovely. The painter was Philip Douglas Maclagan, who is mostly known for misty, quiet landscapes, so this painting is an early and important exception. Interestingly, Maclagan was close friends with Glyn Philpot, who is experiencing a resurgence of appreciation and interest, and is the subject of a major exhibition at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, United Kingdom. The painting is oil on canvas, and is gorgeously framed. (Dimensions include frame; the painting itself is 39 inches high by 49 inches wide.)
