Edoardo Gordigiani (Firenze 1866 - Firenze 1961) "Intimity" Signed and dated lower right: E Gordigiani 1941 Gordigiani, Eduardo. - 18 January was born in Florence. 1866 by the painter Michele and Gabriella Coujère. After completing his classical studies at the Domengé College in 1880, he embarked on a military career at the behest of his family. In a short time, however, overcoming his father's resistance, he succeeded in enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he trained under the guidance of G. Ciaranfi, A. Cassioli, A. Rivalta and G. Fattori. Around 1885 the recurring trips to Paris began with friends E. Fabbri and A. Müller, during which he met E. Manet, J.-A. Renoir, H. Toulouse-Lautrec and P. Cézanne. Their influence, together with that of G. Boldini, proved to be decisive for overcoming the academic precepts and for the subsequent developments of G.'s painting, very indebted to French post-impressionism. In 1888 he presented the Snowing canvas at the Promoter of Fine Arts in Florence and the following year a Portrait at the Universal Exposition in Paris (works of unknown location). Between 1893 and 1894 he moved to New York where he worked successfully for three years exhibiting in some of the major American cities (Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston); the most beautiful portraits of the G. date back to this period, such as that of Eleonora Duse, a friend of her sister Giulietta, and that of Cardinal Gibson (both of unknown location). In 1896 he married Sophie Carpenter Dunning. On his return to Italy he settled first in Rome (1897-99), then in Settignano (1899-1906), in Pisa (1906-15), finally back in Florence, addressing his more and more interests in landscape painting and still life and participating in numerous group exhibitions in the secessionist context (in Berlin in 1904, nine years later in Rome). In 1930 he met Irene Fabbri, his young pupil, whom he married after Sophie's death in 1956. The first solo exhibition of the G. was set up in 1915 in Florence; but neither this nor the subsequent ones hosted in Livorno and Milan aroused the slightest interest from critics and the public. Only starting from the Florentine exhibition at the Via Ricasoli gallery in 1937, his exhibitions won acclaim and public recognition (in 1939 he had an entire hall at the III Roman Quadrennial), which followed at a rapid pace even after his death. Between 1955 and 1956, on the occasion of the painter's ninetieth birthday, important anthological exhibitions were dedicated to him at the San Fedele Cultural Center in Milan, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence - which in 1939 had appointed him Professor Emeritus - and at House of culture of Livorno. G. died on 30 January. 1961 in Popolano di Marradi (in the province of Florence). The measurement shown is of the painting without frame.
