About the Item
An impressive and high quality Italian 19th century Oil on Canvas painting of the Bathing of Venus. This important and richly colored painting, is modeled after a version by Francesco Albani and is framed within a wonderful rectangular frame with richly carved mottled edges. The painting depicts Venus, the splendid Goddess of Beauty, reclining on a chair as three servants, possibly the Three Graces, attend to her. One maiden carefully curls her hair, while another combs her tresses and a third shows her colleague a long pearl necklace, as though seeking her approval. As if this attention was not sufficient, the closest cherub, possibly Cupid, has stored his quiver on his shoulder in order to help attend to the most beautiful of the goddesses. Surrounding Venus are joyous winged cherubs frolicking in the tree, swimming in the river behind, on the river bank, and helping decorate the side table next to the Three Graces.
