James S. Strombotne is an American painter and renowned contemporary artist. He was born in 1934 in Watertown, South Dakota, but was raised and educated in Southern California, receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College in 1956 and his Master of Fine Arts from the Claremont Graduate School in 1959. He received a fellowship from Pomona College to study in Italy, and in 1962 was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for further study in Rome. The same year, a feature article about his work appeared in Time Magazine. Strombotne has had a successful career since 1956. His artwork is held in many prestigious museum and private collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Hirschhorn Museum of the Smithsonian Institute. According to Strombotne, "Any subject is fair game to be interpreted, scrutinized, dissected, reconstructed, pushed, pulled and ultimately transformed, given new life, a new meaning, ordered in accordance to the artist's singular vision of how it should be . . . not how it was or how it could be, but how he sees it."
