John Costigan (1888-1972) oil on canvas, circa: 1950s. In excellent condition. Exciting Expressionist Painting of a lively Carnival Scene. Signed lower right: ''J.E. Costigan", Titled: ''Carnival''. Measures: 28" H x 35" W. Frame: 36" H x 43" W. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, John Costigan was a skilled landscape and figure painter who disdained portraits. He was orphaned and raised in New York by his aunt and uncle, the parents of songwriter, George M. Cohan. Mainly self-taught, Costigan studied briefly at the Art Students League and worked as a lithographer of theater posters. He began making his name in the Fine arts in 1920, and throughout the decade, reaped numerous important prizes for work. In the late 1960s, he enjoyed a revival of interest in his Fine arts talents when more than 50 pieces were borrowed from museums and private collections to be toured nationally in a Smithsonian-sponsored Costigan retrospective.

He began working as an artist in 1952 at the age of 19, studying at the Center d'Art in Port-au-Prince under the guidance of Dewitt Peters, where he met and worked alongside Normil, Lazare, Obas and other great Haitian artists; continuing his education at “Foyer Des Arts Plastiques” with a group of friends. The artist’s best-known painting is Dechoukaj (Uprooting), which depicts the jubilation of the Haitian people at the end of the Duvalier regime in 1986 and hung for many years in the office of the Haitian Prime Minister. Moïse participated in numerous art exhibitions in Haiti, the United States, Canada and other countries, including at the Suski Gallery and Rutgers University.
