"the Judgment of Paris, " Fabulous Art Deco Mural with Nudes by Machin

About the Item

A stunning example of Art Deco painting inspired by classical mythology, this piece depicts Paris, with Mercury by his side and with a golden apple in hand, deciding which of three goddesses, Venus, Minerva and Juno, was the most beautiful. All five of the nude gods and goddesses shown here have a slender, attenuated form, much favored in the 1930s and the landscape with its classical buildings and rolling hills are stylized in the Classic Art Deco manner. The painter was Wilfred Machin, who lived and taught in the New York area and founded a firm that did artwork for the advertising industry in the 1950s and 1960s.
