About the Item

Giuseppe Bison was one of the most imaginative Italian painters of the late eighteenth century. Bison was born in Palmanova in 1762 then moved to Brescia and began to devote himself to painting thanks to the painter Gerolamo Romani. Bison then moved to Venice where he met Costantino Sedini, his mentor; then he met Giannantonio Selva and in 1787 he began working in Ferrara to decorate the Palazzo Bottoni and from there began a long journey of prosperity, of the search for beauty and wise chromatic and perspective games that then gave great fame to the painter himself. In the same year Bison met Antonio Visentini, famous for his classical architecture; thanks to that knowledge he managed to undertake a pictorial journey in which the amalgam of 18th century classicism and theatrical scenography became the rule of his success. During this time Bison obtained much fame and success in the Venetian and Venetian markets with a certain predilection for his landscapes. He died in Milan in 1844. Painting oil on canvas with dimensions of 90 x 79 without frame and 106 x 75 cm with frame depicting a landscape with figures and herds along a path. In the work in question, depicting a large country track, the youthful poetics of Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (Palmanova 1762 - Milan 1844) is unraveled, the last epigone of the great Venetian landscape tradition. In this painting we can see the arcadian research of the landscape with an atmospheric research that pervades the entire composition, in addition to the realistic verve of some passages where the pulsating luminosity charge becomes a way. Appraised and published by the historian of art Federica Spadotto in her book Paesaggisti Veneti del '700.
