"Leda and the Swan", Incised and Painted Wood Panel, Art Deco, Gold and Black
About the Item
This brilliant depiction of Leda and the Swan, a nude female figure and outstretched black swan illustrating the classic mythological story, was painted by Arthur Crisp on wood panel. Crisp first cut into the gessoed panel with shallow incised grooves that outlined the figures and foliate motifs, and then painted over the surface, a rarely used technique that is most commonly associated with the paintings of Maurice Prendergast. Here, Crisp richly embellished the scene with flowering vines and foliate motifs, adding gilding and a rich palette to give great depth to the scene. The frame, too, was incised and painted by the artist, creating a complete, integrated artistic whole. Crisp was born in Canada, and was known for his mural painting in both Canada and the United States, including a set of murals for the new Centre Block, part of the House of Commons, installed in the 1920s.
