Antonio Tibaldi known as the Count (Rome, 1633 - documented until 1675) Still life with musical instruments, sheet music and cake stand Oil on canvas, cm 120 x 169 Frame, cm 132 x 181,5 The present still life with musical instruments, disappeared mirror and basket of sweets, can be attributed, for stylistic and compositional references to the hand of the Roman painter Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, 1635 - documented until 1675). Very little is known about him and his family, in 1675 his name appears in the State of Souls of the Parish of Santa Maria del Popolo where he is registered as a Roman painter of forty years, this allowed to fix his date of birth to 1635. He works with the contemporary Carlo Manieri, with whom he shares in part some composite modules but unlike the latter who prefers the elaboration of complicated architectural structures in Tibaldi shows more accentuated the tendency to saturate the space, in which the backdrops are closed by heavy drapes of fabric. His predilection for the elaboration of complex compositions formed by elegant carpets, curtains, silverware, musical instruments and many other precious objects suggest that there was a direct acquaintance and a probable pupil in the workshop of Francesco Noletti called Il Maltese (1611-1654). Of him it is known that he had seven children with Isabella Barbieri, three of them will continue with the pictorial career: Giovanni Tibaldi cited by Bertolotti as active at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the sister painters Teresa (1720? - 1776), Isabella and Maria Felice Tibaldi (1707 - 1749). The rediscovery of the artist is critically recent and is due to the discovery of two paintings by Christie’s in 1990. The pair of which one with guitar, musical scores, plate of figs, sweets, books and silverware and the other with armor, sword, clock, book and carpet; the second clearly shows on the back of the book the inscription "The Roman Tibaldi". From here we began to reconstruct the artist’s catalogue by adding two other works preserved in the Musée des beaux Artes in Nantes and another in the volume on the still life of Luigi Salerno (La natura Morta in Italia 1560-1805, Rome 1984 p.186). His production shows the use of filling the pictorial space to the widest extent possible, placing heavy carpets and brocades on tables where armor, clocks, musical instruments, pillows, boxes, books, sweet sugars and often, as in our case, it closed the scenic space with heavy fabrics with golden edges. Tibaldi enjoyed great esteem among the Roman patriciate, particularly inclined to these pompous depictions set in interiors where armor, musical instruments, sweets, and goldsmiths are exposed on decorative bases covered in turn by precious damask drapes and curtains...
