About the Item
A pupil of Maurice Denis, whose sacred art workshop he frequented, he received from his master, after having fulfilled a function in public works, the taste for large compositions.
He is essentially a painter of genre, nudes, bouquets as well as landscapes of North Africa.
He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, after 1919, at the Salon des Indépendants from 1921, and at the Tuileries, from 1923, and took part in several exhibitions abroad (notably at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Mexico in September 1941).
In 1922, he exhibited at the Parisian gallery Marcel Bernheim, 2bis rue de Caumartin3. In 1928, he produced the sets and costumes for "Mârouf, savetier du Caire", a comic opera in five acts by Henri Rabaud, libretto by Joseph-Charles Mardrus, which enjoyed lasting success at the Opéra Comique and throughout the world since its creation in 1914. For the Paris Opera, in 1929, he created the sets and costumes for "Creatures of Prometheus", choreography by Serge Lifar, to music by Beethoven4.
He was a teacher at the School of Decorative Arts. Gaëtan de Rosnay worked with him in the 1940s.
