"Nude with Parrot, " Brilliant Cubist-Art Deco Painting by Popczyk, Red and Blue

About the Item

Painted in a kaleidoscopic array of brilliant colors -- tangerine, emerald green, scarlet, deep sky blue and black -- this Cubist work depicts a nude female figure and a parrot sitting on a circular perch, surrounded by a crazy quilt of patterns. The artist -- Joseph Popczyk -- was known for his vivid palette and love of Cubism, and in this case the chevrons and wavy patterns of Art Deco can be detected also. The artist was born in Poland and -- like many of his contemporaries in Eastern Europe -- gravitated toward Paris in the 1910s. There, he loved to depict the flash and jazz of club life in Paris, always with verve and energy. This painting is gouache on heavy paper, and is not matted or framed.
