About the Item
An American oil painting of a black dog set in a gilded frame by artist Charles Liedl from the early to mid-20th century. This painting features a black dog, possibly a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, sitting in the grass, seemingly contemplating his existence. Behind, the gray sky and the dark trees seem the perfect background contrast to the tranquility expressed by the dog. This exquisite 1930s oil painting sits in an lovely four layered gilded frame. It is signed at lower right, Charles Liedel. Charles Liedel was born in Hungary near the turn of the century and came to the United States in the early 1920s after a series of adventures in Russia and Japan during and after WWI. He took up drawing and his nature / animal works were exhibited in a variety of galleries and museums, including The American Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. This circa 1930-1940 Hungarian American oil painting of a dog with a giltwood frame would make an elegant addition to any living room, with the beautiful gilded frame and the subject who exudes serenity.
