Olivier Charles, “Prince Aldobrandini”, Cubist Oil Painting on Canvas, 1956

About the Item

A fantastic 1956 cubist figural oil painting on canvas titled “Prince Aldobrandini” by well-listed Swiss artist Olivier Henrie Charles (b.1931–2013). The princely figure strikes a regal pose, with outstretched arms, legs mid-stride, and voluminous robe conveying a wonderful sense of motion and royal drama. Very handsome cool and earthy tones fill and shadow a myriad of dynamically intersecting and overlapping geometric forms. Everything works in concert to create a memorable Mid-Century Modern cubist portrait that’s both refined and freed by subtle constructivist and Expressionist influences. Of particular note are visually intriguing complementary touches such as the cadmium red base coat peeking through in places, the blood red line work floating over the prince’s head, waist, and feet, and the red artist’s signature and date at lower right. One of the finest works in this style that we’ve seen by Olivier Charles, with skillful execution, excellent composition, and intricate textures on display throughout. Provides new and intriguing discoveries and insights with every viewing, especially when considered alongside the historical context of its subject and his family. The House of Aldobrandini is an Italian noble family originally from Florence, where in the Middle Ages they held the most important municipal offices. They’re now primarily residents of Rome, with extremely close ties to the Vatican that date all the way back to 1592 when Ippolito Aldobrandini became Pope Clement VIII (b. 1536–1605). He made his nephew Pietro Aldobrandini (b. 1571–1621) cardinal, a position he held while also being an influential patron of the arts. Their line has been intricately linked through marriage and heirs since the mid-1600s with another famous Italian family: the Borghese. It’s likely that the Prince Aldobrandini depicted in the painting was actually born of the Borghese bloodline, as at least two notable princes with that name were. Presented in its original white painted wood frame. Verso reveals the canvas to be finely woven burlap. Titled in pencil “Prince Aldobrandini” on stretcher at top, with “No. 30” and “200” written on either side. Dimensions listed are overall; art is H 30.25 in. x W 20 in.

  • Herbert Laurence Davidson “Young Boy on Carousel”, Oil Painting, 1960s
    Located in San Francisco, CA
A poignant 1960s oil painting on canvas depicting a young boy on a stationary carousel by important mid-century American artist Herbert Laurence Davidson (b. 1930–2018). A characteristically sensitive portrait by the artist, with his subject's red-eyed expression and dejected body language suggesting that there would be no more rides that day. With a well-earned reputation as a skilled American Realist, the short, finely hashed brushstroke technique that Davidson employs to achieve a detailed, luminous effect is all the more impressive upon closer examination. • McClelland, Portrait of a Nun with Cornette, Large Oil Painting on Board, 1969
    Located in San Francisco, CA
A tall and captivating mid-century expressionist oil painting portrait of a cornette-wearing nun, signed “McClelland”. Viewed in profile against a rich emerald green background, with just a hint of her plain face peeking out from under an enormous white cornette that dominates the top half of the painting. The crisp shape of the broad white collar on her habit provides a nice visual balance, and contrasts strikingly with the deep cobalt blue of her blouse that trails off into long, blood red-tinged drips. Interesting textures are on display throughout, provided by the artist’s varying brushstrokes, thickly applied paint, and the underlying board—which is likely plywood—upon which the work was done. Signed and dated 1969 at bottom right. In a custom giltwood frame that we would guess dates from the 1980s. Dimensions listed are overall; sight is H 47.5 in. x W 23.5 in. Made famous in American popular culture by Sally Field as Sister Bertrille in the beloved 1967 televising show “The Flying Nun”, heavily starched cornettes—a type of wimple—were a signature piece of clothing worn by the Daughters of Charity, a Roman Catholic society of apostolic life founded by St. Vincent de Paul in the mid-17th century. In the United States, the Daughters of Charity wore them from 1850 to 1964, at which time their nun habits...

  • Will Frates, “Princeton Beach”, Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting, c. 1950
    Located in San Francisco, CA
A large and evocative circa 1950 framed impressionist landscape oil painting on canvas titled “Princeton Beach [Boat Repair]” by noted northern California artist William “Will” E. Frates (b. 1896–1969). Captivating coastal setting depicts an unassuming barn-like structure beside a pair of fishing boats in dry dock, one of which is on stilts with figures discernible on deck going about their repairs. Sandy shoreline terrain in the foreground and turquoise-colored waters in the cove lead to a sliver of beach below verdant foothills in the distance that rise up into a cloud-filled sky. Earthy palette punctuated by reddish-orange pops of color that capture the warm glow of an inimitable California sunset on the building, boat hulls, and a section of water. Artist’s loose yet assured brushwork on wonderful display throughout, with impressionistic details and textures that reward those who lean in for a closer look. Based on Frates’ San Francisco Bay Area roots and the title, the setting could be somewhere near Princeton-by-the-Sea just north of Half Moon Bay, which is a short drive south of San Francisco on scenic Highway 1. Signed on front at bottom and signed, titled, priced, and notated in pencil on verso. Title on verso appears to have originally been “Princeton Beach Boat Repair”, with “Boat Repair” having been crossed out. Original circa 1950 price was possibly overwritten from “$200” to “$300”, which in either case translates to nearly $4,000 in today’s dollars. Presented in its original plaster-coated wood frame with painted faux-stone finish and painted white wood interior border. Canvas backed by stiff paperboard. Will Frates was born in Hayward, California in 1896, and was an active, versatile, and very skilled oil, watercolor, pastel, and etchings artist from the 1920s until his passing while on a painting excursion in Myrtle Creek, Oregon in 1969. His subjects were mostly San Francisco Bay Area and California “Mother Lode” landscapes, though he also painted scenes far afield, from New Mexico to the coast of Maine. Frates first studied art in San Francisco with noted landscape painter and ornithologist William Otto...
